Description Pongamia glabra also known as pongam, karum tree, poonga-oil tree, indian beech many-branched, spreads quickly, feedy or semi-evergreen with a cylindrical head and a small and short trunk. The pinnate, shiny, bright green leaves, 15-30 cm long, forms the evolving rose bronze, 5-9 ovate to elliptical leaflets. In summer and autumn, they grows racemes, 13 cm in length, with pea-like, mauvais-pink, or cream flowers, heavily aromatized when cut. They have round, normal petals, to 1.5Cm in size, often uncurled. Its oil keeps away insects and other microbes from the surface of the skin.The seeds of pongam oil tree yield an essential oil, which contains the chemical constituent karanjin. Karanjin gives the tree extracts its insecticidal and microbial properties.
